The Hon Anthony Roberts officially opened the work to extend Concord Ryde Sailing Club(CRSC) at 10:30 am Monday 14th December. The extension, when complete, will enable CRSC to store additional training and member’s boats, enabling those who cannot store a boat at their home to participate in Club racing with their own boat. The opening was attended by club committee members who were excited to see the commencement of stage one of the project. Mr Roberts was very supportive of the project and said “This is a fantastic addition for the local community and I congratulate the CRSC for their work and look forward to seeing the extension being put to great use by our local sailors”
The Hon Anthony Roberts, Member for Lane Cove, Mr Duncan McCrae, Club Commodore and Mr John Glasson, Fundraising Committee Chairman
The last ten years has seen a significant increase in high density housing in the Ryde and Canada Bay local government areas. Often, those who live in high density housing do not have sufficient storage to enable them to store even a small sailing dinghy. Commercial storage for a dinghy is in the vicinity of $200 per month. This prevents those who cannot store a sailing dinghy at their home from being able to engage in the eco-friendly, healthy and economical sport of sailing. The members of CRSC recognised this impediment to engaging in sailing by many of the growing population of the area and resolved to provide an increase in sail boat storage in February 2013.
Since February 2013 the Committee of CRSC has worked with the Roads and Maritime Service, environmental management authorities and Ryde Council to obtain the necessary approvals to enable the extension to be built. The extension will be over tidal flats and not impact adjacent mangroves. Stage 1 of the project commenced last week with the driving of piles into the river bedrock. Stage 2 will commence In the New Year where Club members will complete construction of the deck that will form the base for the extensions.
The NSW Government has provided $40,000 toward the project through a Community Building Partnership Grant. The application for the grant was supported by the Member for Lane Cove, the Hon Anthony Roberts MP. Without this support, that supplements members’ fundraising activities, CRSC would not have been able to commence.
During 2016 CRSC will continue fundraising activities to enable sufficient funding for stage 3 of the project, the construction of a storage area. Support will be sought from local business and the community.
